How Aromatherapy aids Morning Sickness via inhalation?

Inhalation is the quickest method by which essential oils enter the body and take effect. The surrounding warm, moist air carries the tiny molecules up the nostril as you inhale the aromatherapy blend. This is the only organ with direct access to the brain, influencing our feelings and actions.

There are tiny hairs called cilia right at the top of the nose, from which signals commence their journey to the brain. Inhaling the aromatherapy blend passes over the cilia and a signal is transmitted from the receptor cells to the olfactory bulb to the brain to process the information. Your brain then releases neurochemicals which are passed on via the nervous system which stimulate a bodily action like relaxing or stimulation depending on the aromatherapy blend inhaled... in the case of our Myrtle & Maude 'Queasy Days' aromatherapy blend the action is to help relieve nausea. They directly affect the body physically, which is why essential oils are so effective for different body aliments

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the name given to a unique branch of herbal medicine that uses the medicinal and therapeutic properties of the oil found in various plants. Essential oils are concentrated compounds extracted from plants, twigs, leaves or berries. The aromatic compounds extracted give each essential oil its own unique chemical composition. Essential oils are extracted by a process called distillation, which turns the “essence” of a plant into a liquefied form for various medicinal and recreational uses.

Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy, a form of alternative medicine that employs plant extracts to support health and well-being. Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory.

The physical and emotional impact of morning sickness, nausea and vomiting (NVP) can often can result in anxiety and make life very difficult. Our herbalist has created our 'Queasy Days' aromatherapy blend to support the nuisance of nausea, which can help support morning sickness, travel sickness, motion sickness and chemotherapy sickness

Self-Care Advice

Morning sickness can make the first trimester of pregnancy a challenging time. Your body is experiencing massive changes, which can affect you emotionally and mentally, which is why it’s so important to practice self-care during this stage of your life.

Here are a few tips to help you get through those first 12 weeks:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and fluids, especially when symptoms of nausea and vomiting are at their worst to keep your body working efficiently. Sipping at water or a our Myrtle & Maude 'Queasy Day' tea can even help curb nausea (See Here)
  • Smell fresh scents: Fresh scents of citrus, ginger and mint are uplifting and refreshing, they can help settle the stomach and also cover any other scent that might turn your stomach
  • Adapt your diet: Use your daily diet to manage your pregnancy nausea. Foods high in fat and grease are harder to digest and may worsen your nausea. You may also want to cut back on acidic foods which can exacerbate stomach discomfort. Lastly eating little and often is highly recomeneded rather than three large meals per day
